Blizzard of '03

When I was 11, I had experienced the Blizzard of ’77 in Buffalo, NY. By the time the storm was over, I could walk up the snowbank in the front yard and look into the 2nd story windows. 29 people died, $300 Million in damages. As an example of how bad it was, here’s a car being dug out from above:

A year later, my wife Heather experienced the Blizzard of ’78 here in the Boston area. 54 deaths, $1 Billion in damages, 27 inches of snow. Here’s a picture of the damage done to homes here in Scituate:

Over the past two days, we’ve had the Blizzard of ’03 here in the Boston area. The total amount of snowfall actually beat the the ’78 record by half an inch, but there was much less wind and the coast was spared from flooding.

Kind of anti-climactic, eh?

Kevin on LAMP

I was interviewed for OpenEnterprise Trends a few weeks back about my experiences using Open Source software in a startup company. Specifically, they wanted to know about our use of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP). Pretty good interview.

I said that?

I love being quoted in press releases – my quotes are much better than anything I could (and would) ever say in reality. I wish I had my own PR person for daily life.

“That was a fine sandwich”, stated a satisfied Mr. Jarnot. “I find Wendy’s Grilled Chicken Sandwiches ™ to be of a quality quite unlike that of any competitor”.

BTW, I had signed off on the quote – Rackspace is a fantastic hosting provider.

Kevin Speaks (part trois)

A recap: a few months ago, I was a guest on an investor conference call hosted by Prudential Financial analyst John McPeake. The subject for the hour long call was Open Source software in the enterprise.

I just received a transcript of the call the other day, and it’s available for your enjoyment (PDF).

OK, so I say “sure” a lot. Big deal. :-)
