Pokédex on Wolfram Alpha

This makes the greatest online reference even better. The full Pokédex is available for your data mining needs.

WA Pokédex

To access it via Siri on iOS7, simply ask “Search Wolfram for Snorelax” (or whatever Pokémon you care about).

My (now teenage) sons would have loved this if only it had been released 5 years ago.

Parental Fears vs Reality

Seen on Bruce Schneier’s web site:

Based on surveys Barnes collected, the top five worries of parents are, in order:

  1. Kidnapping
  2. School snipers
  3. Terrorists
  4. Dangerous strangers
  5. Drugs

But how do children really get hurt or killed?

  1. Car accidents
  2. Homicide (usually committed by a person who knows the child, not a stranger)
  3. Abuse
  4. Suicide
  5. Drowning

Why such a big discrepancy between worries and reality? Barnes says parents fixate on rare events because they internalize horrific stories they hear on the news or from a friend without stopping to think about the odds the same thing could happen to their children.

Think about this the next time you don’t let your 10 year old walk down the street to the store.

Massachusetts Students Outperform Peers on International Exam

Yay Mass! I have been very happy with our schools in Scituate, MA. though I do wish they had more programs for gifted students.

Massachusetts students significantly outperformed their peers on a prestigious international math and science exam, according to results released this morning.

In many cases, the state’s impressive showing on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, which is conducted by Boston College, puts the state in the same elite league as several academically powerful Asian countries.

Massachusetts performed strongest on the fourth-grade science exam, coming in second worldwide just behind Singapore and ahead of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Japan. By contrast, the United States as a whole placed eleventh with a score that researchers characterized as significantly lower than Massachusetts.

Star Wars viewing order

A very important question was raised on kottke.org last week –

Let’s say you’re a new father and a movie fan. When your child is of an appropriate age to start watching movies, in which order will you show him/her the six Star Wars movies? By original release date (Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Phantom Menace, Clones, Sith) or according to the intra-movie chronology (Phantom Menace, Clones, Sith, Star Wars, Empire, Jedi)?

In the comments section, Jeffrey Veen gave what was arguably the best answer:

Actually, I guess I do have a preference for order: Show him Episodes 4 and 5 together and let him know that “They find Han – he was ok.” Leave it at that. Let him experience the later disappointments as we did – all grown up.

Amen.

Changes to Scarry's "Best Word Book Ever"

When I was a kid, my favorite book was Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever. The book was originally published in 1963, a few years before I was born. The pictures were beautifully drawn, there were lots of interesting little things to search for (ala “Where’s Waldo”) and I never grew bored with it.

Fast forward 30+ years. We had purchased a new copy for our kids, and while paging through it I discovered that in many instances it was very different. This was a new edition published in 1991 that was much more politically correct and in many ways much less fun (at least IMHO).

Here’s a Flickr photo set comparing the two editions – http://www.flickr.com/photos/kokogiak/sets/1425737/

Kid Foods Breed Fat, Picky Children

Good article on not giving in to picky eaters. Great quote:

I say that parents that lack the ability to convince a kid to voluntarily eat a plate of green beans aren’t cut out for parenthood. If you can’t outsmart a 3 year old, then what the fuck are you doing raising one?
