An 11-year old girl plays Rush’s “YYZ” on a Yamaha Electone organ. Amazing.
Here’s a link to the original if you need to compare.

What an excellent find. YouTube has a two-part documentary on the making of Peter Gabriel’s 1983 masterpiece Security. It features the writing process as well as the technology used (including the Fairlight CMI). Gotta love the 8″ floppy disks.

I have no idea why I thought of this song, but I feel a need to rant…
This is most likely my least favorite song of all time. They played it every freaking hour on the radio back in 1980. These guys made the Knack seem talented. Bad lyrics, bad music, bad bad BAD. I’m sure they were a great band to see live, but since I hated them so much I never bothered.
Damn, that sucks.
Looking back to the early 1980’s, this song along with anything by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger and Jackson Browne made me jump up and change the radio channel.
What happens when you dial 867-5309?
Here’s a video of a group of kids, ages 11-15, covering UK’s “In the Dead of Night – Presto Vivace and Reprise”, a song that is amazingly difficult to perform. Very, very impressive…
List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your livejournal along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.
OK, Brigid has tagged me, so I must reply…
1) Tweaker, “Linoleum” – ex-NiN drummer Chris Vrenna + David Sylvian. How can you go wrong? Very haunting. Video available on YouTube.
2) And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, “And the Rest Will Follow” – damn, I love this album, and this is my fave song. Watch the video.
3) King Crimson, “Sleepless” – an oldie but a goodie. I had it on repeat on my iPod last week. Video
4) Porcupine Tree, “Blackest Eyes” – the best song from their album In Absentia. Starts off loud and bombastic, mellows, and then closes with a bang. Video
5) Sigur Rós, “Takk…” – haunting, beautiful, Icelandic!
6) Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, “Utopia Theme” – I can’t believe this album is now 32 years old. Very trippy, jazzy prog rock. 15 minutes long! This clip will give you an idea…
7) The Orb, “Slug Dub” – I defy you not to smile. Listen
Damn, I love YouTube. Where else can you find ancient Eddie Jobson music videos?
Here are my favorite music videos:
Interesting timeline of electronic instruments. Link
My favorite band, Porcupine Tree, has a new web page featuring their latest music video for the song “Blackest Eyes”. If you enjoy Prog or Psyche, you should check these guys out.
I was lucky enough to win (let along find out about) an auction of Eddie Jobson/Zinc fan newsletters from the mid-1980s, just after Eddie released his Green Album.
I’ve scanned the first newsletter and have made it available for your reading pleasure. This first newsletter is especially interesting, as it discusses Eddie joining and then subsequently leaving Yes during the recording of 90125, their hugely popular album from 1983. Eddie even appears in the video for “Owner of a Lonely Heart” (albeit mostly edited out).
BTW, if you’ve never heard of Eddie, he was the keyboardist/violinist for UK, Curved Air, Frank Zappa, Roxy Music, Jethro Tull, as well as other progressive rock bands in the 70’s and 80’s.
