Getting Started

Back in April of 2012, after months of working out and eating well, I made it down to 159 lbs and <10% body fat. I kept my weight down in the mid-160s for the next 12 months. During the summer of 2013, a work project consumed most of my free time, and over indulgence in snacks and alcohol contributed to my weight climbing back up to 185 lbs. This work project is approaching completion, and now that I'm having a difficult time fitting into many of my clothes, I've decided to get back into shape. As is traditional, I'll start on January 1. My goals and rules are as follows:

  • Drop to 165 lbs by May 2014.
  • Long runs up to 10k.
  • No alcohol on week days (Mo-Th).
  • Reflect back on week on Fri. Plan next week.
  • Run 2-3x per week.
  • Lift 2-3x per week.
  • Morning stretches and body weight exercises.
  • Pics every 5 lbs.
  • Track every day. Can be forgiven if miss weekends.
  • Weigh in every Sunday.

I am also signed up for the Cohasset Tri in June 2014, so I need to ensure that I’m in excellent shape for that event.

It’s almost time to begin, and I can’t wait to get into the groove. I would start right now, but tomorrow we’re heading up to Loon Mountain in NH for a ski trip, and won’t be back until the evening of January 1st. I’ll do my best to take it easy until then, and will obviously be getting plenty of exercise while skiing. I know I’ll be drinking plenty of alcohol while there, and it’s hard to eat well at a ski resort, so the weight loss won’t start until I return.

I’ll be posting updates here as I progress.

National Health, “The Apocalypso”

Love this song. Keyboardist Dave Stewart programmed the drum parts manually. Insane.

Fast, slow, or zombie-like — just run

Running brings out divide between fit and fat Americas – Opinion – The Boston Globe

Here’s the truth: The reason American kids run a mile slowly is because so many adults can’t run one at all. The 15.5 million runners who competed in road races last year cast an oversized shadow that hides the 300 million who didn’t. Proportionally, few adults run; by comparison, our sluggish kids are speed demons.

Meet “badBIOS,” the mysterious Mac and PC malware that jumps airgaps

This is insanely scary and cool at the same time.  From arstechnica:

“We had an air-gapped computer that just had its [firmware] BIOS reflashed, a fresh disk drive installed, and zero data on it, installed from a Windows system CD,” Ruiu said. “At one point, we were editing some of the components and our registry editor got disabled. It was like: wait a minute, how can that happen? How can the machine react and attack the software that we’re using to attack it? This is an air-gapped machine and all of the sudden the search function in the registry editor stopped working when we were using it to search for their keys.”

But the story gets stranger still. In posts here, here, and here, Ruiu posited another theory that sounds like something from the screenplay of a post-apocalyptic movie: “badBIOS,” as Ruiu dubbed the malware, has the ability to use high-frequency transmissions passed between computer speakers and microphones to bridge airgaps.

Pokédex on Wolfram Alpha

This makes the greatest online reference even better. The full Pokédex is available for your data mining needs.

WA Pokédex

To access it via Siri on iOS7, simply ask “Search Wolfram for Snorelax” (or whatever Pokémon you care about).

My (now teenage) sons would have loved this if only it had been released 5 years ago.

New King Crimson lineup!

KALOO CALLAY!  There’s a new version of King Crimson heading our way!  From DGM Live:

The 8th incarnation of King Crimson will be Gavin Harrison, Bill Rieflin, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Mel Collins, Jakko Jakszyk and Robert Fripp.

Writing on his (not yet published) diary for September 24th Fripp notes “The Point Of Crim-Seeing was of a conventional Back Line – Gavin Harrison, Bill Rieflin, Tony Levin and Pat Matstelotto – reconfigured as the Front Line, with Mel Collins, Jakko Jakszyk and myself as Back Line.”

Robert goes on “All the Crims have expressed great excitement at the return to Go! mode. Given the considerable commitments of all members, it will take a year before Crimson is able to perform.”

Bill Rieflin mentioned to me that he told Jacknife Lee (REM and Robbie Williams’ producer) of the triple drumming, and Jacknife’s reply: Of course. We know what two drummers sound like! I’m hoping we’ll find out, and have a pile of fun doing so.”

In his (not yet published) diary for September 7th Fripp begins “dear brother crims, we have one year to prepare for action of the savage variety, and be in Go! mode for september 2014… but essentially, King Crimson is in motion.”

Robert expects that they’ll be rehearsing, in full and small group formations over that period.
