Finally! Saturday Night Live’s Lung Brush has become a reality…

From Yahoo! News – First Non-Drug Asthma Treatment Tested

In a radical experiment, doctors are snaking wires inside the lungs of asthma patients to essentially burn off some of the tissue that blocks their ability to breathe.

Called bronchial thermoplasty, the procedure is the first attempt at a non-drug treatment for asthma.

In June 2003, during a bout of double pneumonia while in the ICU recovering from open heart surgery, I was subjected to three sessions of a broncoscopic lung lavage. This procedure included the insertion of a brush into my lungs. In conjunction with saline solution and a vacuum, this procedure was instrumental in recovering from pneumonia. Fortunately, at the time, I was intubated and unconscious. My wife observed the process on a monitor and informed me several days later of the procedure. At first recalling the SNL skit with Chris Farley I thought she was joking. It really occurred, however.

It was June 2013, not 2003. Tom
