Go, Tommy, Go!

My oldest son, Tommy, started skating lessons the other day. It was his second time on ice skates and after a few minor spills he was having a great time. In fact, he was having so much fun that he wanted to free skate and not line up with the other kids:

He has obviously inherited his Mother’s sense of fun and his Father’s ability to ignore teachers. :-)

Delete a Transaction Log from MS SQL Server

Just in case you run into the same problem I had – tiny 100 MB database with a 1750 MB transaction log. From dBforums:

If you don’t care about saving the trans log and just want to start over, a really easy way to do this is:

1. From the Enterprise Manager, right click on your dB and select All Tasks->Detach Database

2. Go to the storage location for the database on your machine (probably located under the directory …\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Data. From here, find the log file for that particular database which will probably end with extension .ldf.

3. Delete that file (make sure this is the correct log file!)

4. Go back to Enterprise Manager and right-click the ‘Databases’ folder under your SQL Server instance and select All Tasks->Attach Database

5. In the next dialog that pops up, find the file for your database (probably ending in extension .mdf) and located in the same folder as the log file. Enter any other info you might need in this dialog (you might not need to enter anything) and click OK. You might get some kind of error about the log file missing and it will probably ask if it can create a new one. Go ahead and let it.

This looks like a lot of info, but once you do it once it’s really easy. You might want to test this on some other database first to get the feel for it. Also consider backing up your dB before this also.

Rare Picture of Daytime Fireball

From APOD:

Jon Burnett, a teenager from South Wales, UK, was photographing some friends skateboarding last week when the sky did something very strange. High in the distance, a sofa-sized rock came hurtling into the nearby atmosphere of planet Earth and disintegrated. By diverting his camera, he was able to document this rare sky event and capture one of the more spectacular meteor images yet recorded.

The Adventures of Isabel

In honor of my daughter:

Adventures of Isabel

Isabel met an enormous bear,
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t care;
The bear was hungry, the bear was ravenous,
The bear’s big mouth was cruel and cavernous.
The bear said, Isabel, glad to meet you,
How do, Isabel, now I’ll eat you!
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry.
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry.
She washed her hands and she straightened her hair up,
Then Isabel quietly ate the bear up.

Once in a night as black as pitch
Isabel met a wicked old witch.
the witch’s face was cross and wrinkled,
The witch’s gums with teeth were sprinkled.
Ho, ho, Isabel! the old witch crowed,
I’ll turn you into an ugly toad!
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry,
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry,
She showed no rage and she showed no rancor,
But she turned the witch into milk and drank her.

Isabel met a hideous giant,
Isabel continued self reliant.
The giant was hairy, the giant was horrid,
He had one eye in the middle of his forhead.
Good morning, Isabel, the giant said,
I’ll grind your bones to make my bread.
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry,
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry.
She nibled the zwieback that she always fed off,
And when it was gone, she cut the giant’s head off.

Isabel met a troublesome doctor,
He punched and he poked till he really shocked her.
The doctor’s talk was of coughs and chills
And the doctor’s satchel bulged with pills.
The doctor said unto Isabel,
Swallow this, it will make you well.
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t worry,
Isabel didn’t scream or scurry.
She took those pills from the pill concocter,
And Isabel calmly cured the doctor.

Shoving "Kindness" Down Their Throats

For some wacky reason, the idea of government enforcing good manners makes me nervous. It’s already a reality in Singapore – check out their Singapore Kindness Movement.

I had the pleasure of visting Singapore a few years ago. It’s an interesting place, with a government that strongly believes in Capitalism. It also, on the other hand, strongly believes in government enforcement of propriety. Chewing gum is illegal. Spitting is an arrestable offense, as is jaywalking. Big Brother-type signs are everywhere, reminding the populace that they are being watched and that they should behave as mandated by “society” (ie. the government). Here’s an excellent example — it’s a photo I took in the heavily Indian section of Singapore:

Excellent Milton Friedman Interview

Right Wing News (God, I hate that name) has an excellent interview with Nobel-prize winning economist Milton Friedman.

Fave quote:

I am favor of cutting taxes under any circumstances and for any excuse, for any reason, whenever it’s possible. The reason I am is because I believe the big problem is not taxes, the big problem is spending. The question is, “How do you hold down government spending?” Government spending now amounts to close to 40% of national income not counting indirect spending through regulation and the like. If you include that, you get up to roughly half. The real danger we face is that number will creep up and up and up. The only effective way I think to hold it down, is to hold down the amount of income the government has. The way to do that is to cut taxes.

Windows Memory Diagnostic

From http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp:

The Windows Memory Diagnostic tests the Random Access Memory (RAM) on your computer for errors. The diagnostic includes a comprehensive set of memory tests. If you are experiencing problems while running Windows, you can use the diagnostic to determine whether the problems are caused by failing hardware, such as RAM or the memory system of your motherboard. Windows Memory Diagnostic is designed to be easy and fast. On most configurations, you can download the diagnostic, read the documentation, run the test and complete the first test pass in less than 30 minutes.
